5 Tips to learn English faster!

English is one of the most spoken languages in the world. More and more people are migrating to countries whose official language is English – Australia, the UK, Canada, the USA and many other countries. Learning a new language is always a challenge. But it can be especially difficult when you are trying to learn English as a second language.

In this post, we will share 5 tips and strategies that will help you learn English faster.

1. Decide what’s the most important and relevant to you

There are four macro-skills.

1. Listening

2. Speaking

3. Reading

4. Writing

Depending on your level of English and the situation you are in, you will find one or two skills to be more important than the rest. For example, if you are working in a factory or coffee shop and you are finding difficulty understanding and responding to people, then you should prioritise listening and speaking.

The key is to practice what is more relevant to you.

Ask yourself these 3 questions:

1. What am I trying to achieve by learning English?

2. What problem am I trying to solve by learning English?

3. What is the most important task or skill I can focus on right now?

2.  Listen and watch English materials often

From the moment we are born, we start to listen, see, and feel.  Then we begin to speak after 9 to 14 months. Likewise listening and watching videos is an amazingly effective strategy to learn any language on the way to mastering speaking it.

Listen to materials where they speak slowly and clearly. For example, you can watch

1. English Have a Go

2. Living English – Australia Plus

3. ABC Education

If you want something more challenging, you can then watch movies.

3. Practice real conversations with real people

When trying to learn a language, you should apply what you learn in class with real people in a real context. It may be very intimidating at first or you may feel shy at first. But remember that success lies beyond our comfort zone. To be successful, we should not shy away from doing what makes us uncomfortable or things that are not so easy.

You could:

1. Engage with your teacher or classmates in random conversations and discussion groups

2. Make new friends at social events such as birthdays, weddings, or meetings

3. Join meet-up groups and practice your English

4. Practice your grammar by learning from your mistakes

There are two ways to learn grammar. The traditional method is where you learn the grammar rules and do activities that test your knowledge. It is not a highly effective strategy, and it takes a lot of practice often, you do not end up applying what you’ve studied in real life.

Most native speakers do not remember grammar rules but speak fluently. This is because we learn from listening to patterns.

A more effective method of learning English grammar is by learning from your mistakes and deriving patterns from what you correct.

5. Learn English from a teacher

Nobody has become a doctor by himself or herself. Everyone needs guidance and coaching to learn a new skill.

If you want to learn English faster, you need a teacher. Not any teacher, but someone who understands your needs and gives you continuous feedback, encourages and motivates you.

There are 3 main benefits of working with a teacher (face to face as opposed to learning online)

1. It helps you focus on what is important

2. Customized learning materials are prepared to address your specific learning needs

3. You receive continuous feedback which helps you learn faster

At Faster-English, we give you one on one or small group sessions where your teacher will give you detailed feedback on how to improve.
