Passive Voice

Passive voice is a grammatical construction in which the subject of the sentence receives the action. Passive voice is often used to achieve a sense of detachment, or when it is not important who performs the action.

For example:

Passive voice:     The book was read by John.

Active Voice:      John read the book.
