Hello Everyone! I’m Oksana, and today I’m excited to share with you my journey of living in Australia for the past 20 years. Moving from my home country to Australia was a huge step, filled with hopes and uncertainties.
My first days in Australia were like stepping into a whole new world. Everything was so different – the bustling cities, the vast landscapes, and the unique wildlife. I was fascinated by the local culture, from the laid-back lifestyle to the friendly ‘G’day’ greetings. Learning the local lingo was fun but challenging. Words like ‘arvo’ for afternoon and ‘barbie’ for barbecue were amusing to me. And then there was Vegemite – an acquired taste that I eventually grew to love!
Challenges I Faced
Adapting to life in Australia wasn’t always easy. One of my biggest challenges was improving my English. I realized that to truly feel at home and make connections, I needed to communicate effectively. Attending ESL classes was a turning point. Not only did my language skills improve, but I also met other migrants. We shared stories, supported each other, and formed lasting friendships. Missing my family and friends back home was hard, but these new connections made the transition smoother.
Fun in Australia
Australia is a land of endless fun and adventure. I fell in love with its beautiful beaches, where I spent many sunny days swimming and relaxing. Australian barbecues became a favourite pastime, a perfect way to enjoy the great outdoors with friends. And then there’s cricket – a sport I knew nothing about before but now eagerly follow. The excitement of a match and the community spirit it brings is something I cherish.
Opportunities in Australia
One thing I’ve learned is that Australia is a land of opportunity. It’s a place where hard work and determination can lead to success. I’ve had the chance to study further and pursue a career that I’m passionate about. This country encourages you to chase your dreams, no matter where you come from.
Now, I find great joy in assisting new migrants. Sharing my experiences and offering advice makes their journey a bit easier. Whether it’s helping them find housing, navigate the job market, or simply understand Australian customs, it’s my way of giving back to the community that welcomed me.
Reflecting on the past 20 years, I realize how much I’ve grown and adapted. Australia has become more than just a place I live; it’s a part of who I am. The friendships I’ve made, the experiences I’ve had, and the lessons I’ve learned are invaluable.
